Charles Willson Peale was a celebrated Revolutionary-era artist—known as the portraitist of the “Founding Fathers.” He was a member of the Sons of Liberty, a captain in the Pennsylvania militia, and an advocate for the advancement of art and culture.

⁣Peale also accepted slaves as payment for portraits.
